Apple IPhones To Get 5G Software Update In India By December 2022

Apple iPhone users in India will have to wait for two months to receive a software update that enables 5G connectivity, according to the latest report by ET Telecom. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 5G services in India during the Indian Mobile Congress on October 1. However, many 5G smartphones from top brands like Samsung, Google and Apple do not support 5G connectivity yet and await a software update that will bring the next generation of connectivity to these phones. The ET Telecom report states that iPhone users will only get a software update to support 5G networks by December 2022 as Apple is currently testing the performance and quality of 5G networks in India. The iPhone 12, iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 along with the iPhone SE 2022 are being tested on Airtel 5G and Jio 5G networks, as these are the only two 5G networks that have gone live in four to eight cities.“We are working with our carrier partners in India to bring the best experience to iPhone users as soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance is completed. 5G will be enabled via a software update and will start rolling out to iPhone users in December,” Apple said in a statement to ET Telecom.

Apple has stringent quality checks to ensure that the experience is common across all of its iPhones and with 5G too, it’s taking the same path. The company is testing the iPhones which support 5G (iPhone 12 and later) for network speeds, its impact on battery life, and other use cases and only after it is satisfied with the various checks.

Meanwhile, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has summoned over 30 people from smartphone brands, telecom operators and industry leaders and more to expedite software updates to 5G phones in India. This meeting is being held today, October 12 and 5G deployment is likely to pick up speed after this gathering.
